It's the year 2006 #pastfuturetechnology.

As 3G services are taking off at peak data speeds of 384kbps, another form of digital media is stealing the spotlight – Digital TV. The ISDB-T standard 1seg (One Seg) is deploying across Japan and quickly gaining momentum, with KDDI au being the first carrier to launch a compatible handset.

On Vodafone, the Sharp 905SH is the first AQUOS branded mobile device to feature a rotating screen and 1seg receiver. For those unfamiliar with the Sharp AQUOS range, it's the companies LCD TV line-up.

The main selling point of the Sharp 905SH lies in its 1seg capabilities. It features a 2.6" wide-QVGA screen at 240 x 400px that can be rotated by 90 degrees into landscape mode for convenient TV watching. In the early days, handsets featured a pull-out antenna, which would later be internalised.

The phone also features a 2Mpx camera, Osaifu-Keitai (NFC mobile wallet), GPS and maps services.

1seg broadcasting initially followed the same schedule as regular broadcasting services, but content providers would eventually be allowed to create custom programmes to suit the needs of mobile users.
